Carbon County Visitors’ Council (CCVC) celebrates the Anniversary of the Continental Divide Trail Designation and Carbon County’s wealth of outdoor recreation.
November 9, 2021—Carbon County—Carbon County Visitors’ Council is excited to celebrate the Anniversary of the Continental Divide Trail Designation. “Outdoor recreation is as important to Americans today as it was back in 1925 when Benton MacKaye, father of the Appalachian Trail, cast his vision of the first formed trail,” said Leslie Jefferson, CEO, CCVC.
The Continental Divide Trail
“The Continental Divide Trail was initially walked and marked by the Rocky Mountain Trail Association in 1962. With the passage of the National System Act in 1968, the Appalachian and Pacific Crest Trails were designated. In 1978, the National Parks and Recreational Land Act was amended to include 5 trails to the systems, including the Continental Divide Trail. In 2012, the Continental Divide Trail Coalition (CDTC) was formed with a broad community of Trail partners, local communities, enthusiasts and supporters,” said Jefferson.
“CCVC supports and partners with the CDTC. We are proud to have two CDTC Gateway Communities – Rawlins and Encampment/Riverside – in our county. In October, the CDTC Rawlins Gateway Community Signs were installed at the north, south, east, and west entrances of Rawlins,” said Jefferson. “Each CDTC Gateway Community is encouraged to recruit CDTC Gateway Ambassadors. It is exciting to have hiking enthusiasts, Jacob Mickelson and Emily Haver as our CDTC Rawlins Gateway Community Ambassadors. Jacob and Emily have been extremely proactive in promoting the CDT in 2021 with a seminar on first aid kits, and at least two group hikes. In conjunction with the CDT Designation Day celebration, Jacob and Emily will be conducting a “How to pack your pack” seminar at the Rawlins Library tomorrow, Wednesday, November 10th, beginning at 6:30PM,” said Jefferson.

CCVC invests in attracting visitors and in Carbon County residents. “With the CARES funding last year and this year, CCVC purchased PPE in the form of face coverings with scenes of Carbon County and travel size hand sanitizers. Also, last fall CCVC partnered with Waves Web Design in a Travel Safe micro-site within our wyomingcarboncounty.com domain and we are happy to announce the creation of our Hiking the Continental Divide Trail landing page at: wyomingcarboncounty.com/cdt,” said Jefferson.
“In addition to celebrating the CDT in our own backyard, CCVC has partnered with One Reel Media House to create five activity videos that promote our excellent outdoor recreation opportunities and community events. Launched with the CDT page is our new hiking video,” said Jefferson. New videos will be released on a new topic every few weeks.
